The Growth of Mobile Devices for Personal Computing

I hear it all the time - "What is a mobile website?", or "Why do I need a mobile website?".

If you're from my generation you did not grow up with a computer in your house. The first time I encountered a computer was when I worked at Daytimers back in 19**, I was typing address corrections on a typewriter that spat out a roll of paper with holes punched into it to be fed into the company's computer where punch cards would be made. I can even remember my mom, who also worked at Daytimer's bringing home punchcards that were going to be thrown away and we began folding and gluing them together to make Christmas trees that were spray painted and decorated. That was my introduction to computers and customer data management systems.

That really wasn't such a long time ago in the course of history but eons in the course of computer technology. About a decade later we bought our first home computer for our business. The first computer we bought was probably not more than 486K, and if I remember right we had to decide between 386k and 486k and we used a dial-up modem to get on the web.I remember taking a book along with me when I was working on the web because a page could take a few minutes to down-load and I could read a page or two of a book while I was waiting for the web page to load.

I can remember looking for computers, not much more than 5 years ago, when we first saw a gig of memory installed on a pc. The other day I was looking at a new computer and they are now coming with a terabyte of memory.

But what does this have to do with mobile? The truth is that for many of today's computer users a laptop or pc is as antiquated as the punchcards from the 1970's.

Today the first computing device many new users will encounter, become familiar with and use, is some sort of mobile tablet, ipad, smartphone or other mobile device. Here are some facts taken from a keynote address by Luke Wroblewski at Drupalcon you should be aware of:
  • Each day, 371k babies are born, and 1.5 million mobile devices are sold
  • There are 6b connections today project to be 12b by 2016
  • 25% of US users do not use a laptop to access the web and by 2015 50% internet users will access the will only access the web via a mobile device.
  • Paypal 2009 = $141m in mobile payments
    • 2010 = $750m in mobile payments
    • 2011 = $4b in mobile payments
  • Twitter: 55% of users are mobile
  • Pandora: 70% of users are mobile
  •  Youtube: 400m views on mobile per day
  • Yelp: 40% of searches start on mobile devices
  •  Facebook has 425m mobile users a little more than half of their total users
So why should you develop a website for mobile deices? Watch the  keynote address Luke W presented last year at Drupalcon, it is an hour long but well worth watching, if you want to get an idea of the growth of mobile and why you should consider going mobile.
